Keighley learner drivers

Before driving on a public road, you will need a valid Provisional Driving Licence. The Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) application form (Form D1) can be obtained from your local Post Office but you can also apply online from Direct Gov

Green light for Keighley driving test centre

Plans to turn an old HGV testing station in into a centre have been approved.

The (DSA) put forward the proposals for the industrial estate site at Steeton Grove, which were approved last by members of Keighley Area Planning Panel.

The agency wants to carry out demolition and refurbishment work to provide facilities to test drivers of cars, motorbikes and heavy .

Bradford planning officers had recommended the application be approved, but it faced opposition from Steeton-with-Eastburn Parish Council.

At the panel meeting, the parish council chairman, Councillor David Mullen, said he was concerned about the prediction that the facility could generate up to 240 vehicle movements per day.

He said this congestion could be exacerbated if the village started to be used regularly as a test route for .

He added that the application made no mention of the need to safeguard a proposed cycle route to Steeton railway station, which would along the eastern boundary of the site.

Hamish Robertshaw, speaking for the DSA, pointed out that the prediction of 240 vehicle movements was a “theoretical maximum” based on a worst-case scenario.

He said the centre would have a negligible effect on the network, would not affect the cycle route and would generate some additional employment.

“There is an urgent need for a test centre in the Steeton and Keighley area,” he argued.

Planning officer Martyn Burke said developing the facility would mean examiners and candidates would no longer have to travel to Skipton.

His report to the panel stated that the Steeton site would enable the relocation of staff from the nearby test centre at Keighley, which closed a year ago for health and safety reasons.

The planning panel voted unanimously in favour of the proposals.
